On our last trip to London we spent a week near King’s Cross and Euston Station. We had plenty of time to try lots of restaurants in this area and we found some good ones!
Dishoom is a must visit when in the UK. They have a few locations and we have been to Shoreditch and King’s Cross. Both times we have managed to queue in the rain. They know that diners are going to be waiting in line and are so hospitable in providing umbrellas, chai, mint tea, and sherries while you wait.
The food and architecture are inspired by old Irani cafés, which “…opened early last century by Zoroastrian immigrants from Iran, there were almost four hundred cafés at their peak in the 1960s.”
After waiting in line you’re ushered into the Permit Room, a place to wait for your table and order a beverage. From there you’re taken to your table and the food is always worth the wait.
Granger & Co.
Granger & Co. is a picture-perfect place for breakfast and lunch. We had a late lunch with friends and a short wait. We tried several of the sandwiches and the burger was a big hit, too.
The Gilbert Scott
Located in the castle-like St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel, The Gilbert Scott calls itself an English Feasting Hall and you will have a dinning experience as grand as the beautiful dinning room. The service was stellar and every morsel and sip was a delight. This would be a good place to try some of the English sparkling wine that is having such a moment right now.
One of the most surprising and wonderful places we visited on this trip was German Gymnasium. (Thanks for the tip, Tracy!) As the name suggests, the massive restaurant used to be a gym. There’s a large dinning room below and spacious loft above with a small bar and cozy booths.
We only had drinks here, but they were fantastic. The cocktail makers are true craftsmen who put a lot of thought and care into their drinks. The classic cocktails are excellent, but venture out and order one of the specialties. The presentation for the speciality drinks is wonderful.
If you find yourself near King’s Cross and Euston Station you can’t go wrong with any of these delicious dining options! And if you’re staying elsewhere in London, German Gymnasium is worth a trek across town.
