One of the most common questions I get about travel to the UK is, “How is the food?” What’s behind this question is an incorrect notion that English food is tasteless or weird. This might be a stereotype leftover from WWII rationing, but it’s completely wrong.

There are lots of places to eat where you get something truly traditionally English and delicious. English breakfast is one of those amazing meals you need to eat while in the UK and a proper café is the best place to have it.

A Brief History of English Cafés

The history of English cafes is very old, but the modern versions started popping in the 1950s. London and much of the country was rebuilding from WW2 and there was an optimist uptick. The first wave were coffee shops in Soho which grew into places where people from all different walks of life could stop in and get a warm meal.

What is a Proper English Breakfast?

English breakfast is a combination of: bacon, eggs, sausages, black pudding, beans, and tomatoes. It also includes toast and tea or coffee.

Proper English Breakfast

Regency Café

Hours: Mon – Friday: 7:00 – 14:30, Sat: 7:00 – 12:00, Sun: closed

Tip: This is a cash only establishment.

Regency Café has been dishing up quick and delicious meals since 1946. It’s such a classic café that it has been in lots of tv shows and movies.

When you visit, you’ll join the queue that often overflows onto the sidewalk. Inside the place has a wonderful, welcoming charm, but don’t mess about! The owner is quick to require your order from you. At least the menu is simple and tasty:

Set Breakfast deal – £5.50
1 Egg + 2 Bacon + Sausage + Beans OR Tomatoes + Bread OR Toast + Tea OR Coffee.

Breakfast Extras:

  • Black Pudding – 90p
  • Bubble & Squeak – 90p
  • Hash Browns – 90p

One last thing, they don’t take cards so make sure you have cash with you. We didn’t realize this until we were in line. Thankfully breakfast is so affordable the we scrounged up enough between the four of us to cover everyone. £8-10 per person is more than enough if you want to get some extra sides.
